Terrance Stanley "Terry" Fox, (July 28, 1958 – June 28, 1981) was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete, and cancer research activist. In 1980, three years after losing a leg to osteosarcoma, he attempted to run across Canada in the Marathon of Hope to raise awareness of the disease. Fox hoped to raise one dollar for each of Canada's 24 million people, a goal he met despite being forced to end his run after 143 days and 5,300 kilometers when his cancer spread to his lungs. Fox died nine months after being forced to end his marathon.
